  >RAIMAT

In 1914 Manuel Raventós purchased 3,500 hectares of wasteland in Lérida. At that time today’s thriving Raimat estate was a stony, desolate wilderness with a ruined castle and it was difficult to believe that the land could be productive. The construction of the Aragon and Catalonia canal in 1910, however, increased the area under irrigation by 43,400 hectares and made the Segrià district fertile.

In order to make the land productive Manuel Raventós decided to dig more than 100 kilometres of irrigation channels to transport water from the canal to the parched Raimat land. The canal did not supply all the water that was required, however, and as the result of a study to ensure maximum efficiency, surface irrigation was implemented followed by a sprinkler system.

In the early years extensive areas of poplars were planted to improve the arid soil. Other types of tree were also planted, until in the decade of the 30s the number of trees planted at Raimat exceeded one million. Some of the poplar wood was used for making Codorníu cases but it was replaced by cardboard when the last Raimat timber was exhausted.

A village of more than one hundred houses was also built together with a reservoir for collecting water, 150 kilometres of roads, grain warehouses, stables and a winery, which was the first reinforced concrete structure built in Spain.

The first grape harvest was duly celebrated, although only five large baskets of fruit were picked. The old people of the region could not remember ever seeing grapes at Raimat, in spite of the fact that on the facade of the castle they featured in the coat of arms, giving the impression that in the past the land had been rich in wine.

In the 60s the great Raimat vine-growing revolution began. Much impressed by the high quality of wine from the New World, Californian methods were introduced in the Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada plantations. New varieties were also planted including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot. In spite of limited experience, the wines from these new varieties were of excellent quality and therefore more were planted as they gained prestige in the markets in which they were launched.
