  BACH

Bach’s history goes back to 1915 when the brothers Pere and Ramón, whose surname was Bach i Escopet, moved to Sant Esteve Sesrovires from Barcelona and bought the “Can Estrada” property, which dates from the 18th century.

With the aid of profits from their cotton business the Bach brothers were able to invest in launching the winery which gradually grew with the purchase of new properties to an area of 365 hectares. The 1920 grape harvest of Xarello and Macabeo announced Bach’s coming of age.

Pere and Ramón Bach established themselves in the Penedés region with the aim of making a wine for ageing and for this reason they built a depository 95 metres in length. They then stored inside it 1,000 Bordeaux oak barrels which they had bought at a unit price of Ptas 50. The Bach brothers fostered the idea of making wine and were, together with their winemakers, responsible for choosing their brand name. They looked back into their textile traditions to find a name and came up with extrísimo, as the high-quality cotton imported from Egypt and India was called. The first bottles of Bach were present in the Barcelona World Trade Fair of 1929.

The Civil War, however, partially destroyed the atmosphere that Bach had enjoyed in the carefree  1920s and had tragic consequences for the family. Ramón died and his brother Pere, although he survived the conflict, was much affected by his memories. A few years later, in 1942, he decided to sell the property. Subsequently Bach had a number of owners who, amongst other things, undertook the construction of lengthy underground passages for ageing cava and transformed the winery’s commercial and wine-making procedures.

In 1975 a new, definitive change occurred with the arrival of the Raventós family, who acquired the property and integrated Bach into its group of wineries.
